Yearly Physical Exams
Comprehensive yearly physical exams are the most important preventative health procedures and diagnostic aids available for your pets. These exams include thorough histories and follow-ups, whether it is your first time visiting Town & Country Animal Hospital or your fiftieth.
If your pets have not been receiving this level of attention, important clues to their overall health are being missed. Remember: your pets age seven times faster than you do and they rarely complain of aches and pains that are clearly warning signs of serious diseases or illnesses. It is important to give your pets and their veterinarian the opportunity to look for these signs.
We recommend an annual physical exam.
THE INFORMATION WE GATHER AT EACH ANNUAL EXAM BECOMES PART OF YOUR PET'S MEDICAL HISTORY. IT CAN BE CRITICAL WHEN AN EMERGENCY OR SUDDEN ILLNESS ARISES.

- a. Significant weight loss can be an early warning sign of disease. Obesity is a common problem for older dogs. Assess diet and nutritional needs.
- b. Rectal exam to check for abnormalities and analysis of stool sample.
- c. Assess the condition of your dog's legs, hips, joins, and spine.
- d. Hair should appear healthy and well-groomed. Dull, dry, brittle hair or hair loss may indicate an underlying illness. Check skin for infection or signs of fleas.
- e. Palpate your dog's abdomen for abnormal masses or pain.
- f. Listen to chest for heart murmurs, irregular heartbeat and abnormal lung sounds.
- g. Examine eyes for cataracts, glaucoma or inflammation.
- h. Examine ears for ear mites, infection or inflammation.
- i. Evaluate nose and nasal passages for signs of upper respiratory disease.
- j. 95% of all dogs two years or older have periodontal disease. Evaluate your dog's teeth, and check color and condition of gums.
- k. Palpate lymph nodes to check for inflammation or tumors.
- l. Heartworm check.
